A Florida man who flew to Oahu and sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl he met on the Internet will spend five years on probation and be required to register as a sex offender.
Anthony Scott Waterman, 34, of Destin, Fla., was sentenced Monday by Circuit Judge Steven Alm on 13 counts of third-degree sexual assault.

Police arrested Waterman Nov. 21 at Honolulu Airport after the girl told officers he had fondled her in his rented room in Kaneohe a few days earlier. The girl showed police a picture of the man that she had taken with her cell phone.

Waterman, who faced 20 years in jail if the case had gone to trial, pleaded guilty to the reduced charges in a deal with prosecutors. Alm credited Waterman for the 307 days he spent in jail.

It is unclear whether Waterman will apply to serve his probation in Florida.

During court proceedings, Waterman said in his defense that the teenager had told him she was 25 years old and looking for a husband.

Jim Fulton, spokesman for the city prosecutor's office, said the victim acknowledged to investigators that she lied about her age.

"The law still says he has the burden to substantiate that from her," Fulton said. "It's an appropriate resolution for this case."

Waterman has been arrested 11 times for misdemeanor offenses in other jurisdictions.
