Hernandex convicted in Washington sex abuse case.

05/12/2008

A Maryland man, accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old Washington girl, was convicted Friday of third degree sexual abuse and enticing away a minor.

Victor M. Mejia-Hernandez, 30, was arrested in January after the girl's family reported her missing, according to a report from Washington County Attorney Barbara Edmondson. Court records said Mejia-Hernandez met the child over the Internet in December 2007 and drove to Iowa Jan. 9, 2008. He then persuaded the girl to stay with him at a local motel where police found them, the report said.

Mejia-Hernandez, who was legally in the United States on a work visa, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on the abuse charge and five years in prison on the enticing charge - both of which will be served concurrently.
